The Annual Report on SMEs in Europe was launched in November 2017 - showing the performance of SMEs in Europe and their importance for the economy.
This edition has a focus on Self employment and shows that there are 31 million self-employed individuals in EU-28 states and that is about 14% of total employment.

Newly founded firms, created by self-employed, have survival rates typically between 30-60 % aer the first five years. These figures are not fundamentally different from other newly founded businesses. Also, their mortality rate does not accelerate over time.
